PROFESSIONAL BULL RIDING (the real stuff)

By Jessica Bianculli

bull_ridingYEEHAW!!! If you’re ready to get dirty then pull your cowboy boots out from the back of your closet (you know you have a pair), grab your plaid shirt and get ready to experience a whole lotta country in the middle of New York City.

The Professional Bull Riding (PBR) is a national event that comes to Madison Square Garden once a year, and yours truly was lucky enough to score some tickets to this year’s event. For a girl who was born and raised in the city, the experience was definitely new and adrenaline packed! I mean, how could it not be with a stadium full of heavy bucking bulls ready to fling cowboys into the air?!

For those of you who don’t know, the PBR is a dirt sport where they take a good bucking bull (they can weigh anywhere between 1700 to 2200 lbs). You tie a rope around their backside, throw a cowboy on and… there you have the professional bull riding championship. The cowboy should last up to eight seconds on that bull without getting thrown off and possibly stomped on.

When you first walk into the arena you can’t help but get overwhelmed by the waves of cowboy hats in the audience, and not to mention the smell of bull…shit.  But once you get past the culture shock and the lovely “aroma,” it’s game time! Because the second that bull is let out of its stall, the tension and the adrenaline that fills the stadium is almost immediately ignited and the crowd is roaring with excitement.

The championship will be airing this weekend on NBC.  So, if you didn’t get to pay a visit to these cowboys while they were in New York, be sure to check out the championship on Saturday, January 30. Either way, the PBR will be returning to NYC in 2011 in the first week of January.

Here’s a Professional Bull Riding 101 lesson for the curious folks out there:
