Everytime I walk into the Penn State bookstore, they have the top 20 best bestsellers right at the entrance. Eat, Pray and Love is always on there, and i am always tempted to read it, but i have not.

I am currently reading The Arabian Nights, which is perhaps one of the best translations of The Thousand and One Nights. This isn’t usually something i would read, but one night that i had trouble sleeping my boyfriend who happens to Arab, told me a couple of stories he had heard as a child. They were beautiful, and the next day i bumped into the book. At first i bought it, and thought to myself a waste of another $20 because i’m not going to have the time for it. But i have, and it is wonderfully enchanting!!

Next on my list is Memoria De Mis Putas Tristes, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
After reading Love in the Time of Cholera, i am completely in love with him :)

Now as a double major in Geography & Economics, i will read Globalization and its Discontents by Joseph E. Stiglitz. Supposedly everyone keeps telling me that this is the book to read because it shows ‘how the major institutions of globalization have failed the struggling countries they were meant to serve’

And i have seen the secret alot, i recently got the DVD of it, and eventually in time i will read it…

What about doing one on what are you currently wearing, maybe what kind of brands or what kind of body spray?

-looking forward to your next one

I am currently reading women and money. And of course alot of articles from spiritual teachers like Anthony de Mello. I dont think Oprah has brainwashed us, even though I must admit my mom started reading your 2nd book; she’s in her bookclub. But I think the older we get the wiser we become. The more we want to find who we are and learn from other people who have been there and done that. I think it’s all a part of growing up, and maturing. Let me know your thoughts on your 1st book. I heard about it.

Very nice. I enjoyed your first episodes, hopefully there will be many more to come. As to your comment about Oprah brainwashing “American Society”, I don’t know what side to stand on. Yes, it’s true that a book goes on her show and almost instantly it is a best seller; author’s, publisher, photographers are making money :) But at the same time these people (oprah watchers) are reading and not watching TV. Yeah! I’m all for that.

Hi Mercedes! I love the web clip, you are too adorable. I am looking forward to login in again next week.

As far what I am currently reading I am tossing back and forth between two books (depending on my mood). The Speed of Trust by Stephen M. R. Covey and Memoria de mis putas tristes by by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I usually read for a “purpose”, mostly for professional advancement, so I am always reading some sort of management book. This summer I decided I wanted to read for fun, so I decided to pick up Marquez which is such a wonderful relaxing read.

Nicole Sanchez (00:46:24) :

I am reading two books at the moment (As I usually do).The first is for the book club that I am a founding member of (Simple Pleasures Book Club) and it is called “Letters to a Young Brother MANifest your Destiny” written by Hill Harper (actor on CSI:NY). We read a new book every month, and they have to be written by African American Authors. The second book I am reading is “High Five” by Janet Evanovich, this book is part of her Stephanie Plum novel series, there are thirteen books in the series. These books in the series are a light read and very funny.
I don’t think Oprah has brainwashed us but instead helped to push the joy of reading to the forefront. I think many people want to read but they just don’t know where to start. So, what better place then with a book that someone recommends and who better to recommend a book than Oprah!

I really enjoyed this first episode, good way to get real life opinions and input on current trends and issues.

I am an avid reader although I have been slacking lately. The book on my nightstand right now is “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho but I am also interested in reading Eat, Pray, Love so please keep me posted on your views of the book.

I find it difficult to just go out out and buy the books on the bestsellers list so I am a frequent library visitor. Check out your local public library for DVD’S, CD’S and books.. all for free! Some of the library websites even offer home delivery so you don’t have to leave your house to get the summer’s best reads.

Can’t wait till next episode!

Great idea Mercedes! Those books are actually all on my list… right now I am reading “Skinny Bitch.” and I think it’s great! The language is very funny but the message is very straight forward about the meat industry and how the food we eat is processed. You should read it!

Let me know how those other two books are, and if I hear of any job openings I will definately let you know. By the way are you going to Unity this year in Chicago? I am going with Cindy and Clarissa from NBC so if you want to come we have a room if you want to room with us! Let me know girl, good luck!

Hi Mercedes,

I hope you enjoyed your book, and will post your next beChic Tv episode soon. Well, I recommend you read anything, by Paulo Coehlo. I have read a couple books by him including “The Alchemist” and “Veronica Decides to Die” and on the third now “Brida.” His books are all very enlightening, and are guaranteed to make you question things, and discover others. Hope you pick of one of his reads. :)

Haven’t seen “In the Heights”. Reason: not a big play go-er.

Thought it would of been good to know what you thought about it… I saw on the news some reports about people criticizing it for being “real” enough… Again, I haven’t seen it… definitely must have been good with 4 awards. Still I want to know the Mercedes take on it. =)

Oh, and visit… www.PorAmorA.org when you get a chance.

I have not seen “In the Heights” yet, but I do plan on seeing it as my ex ex girlfriend was Dominican so I got a good taste of the Heights on various occasions. It was such a vibrant area and I would love to see if the play captured that exact energy. Awesome webisode. Great hair by the way Cedes!

Love the webisode…My summer reading list: 1) The Witch of Portobello by Paulo Coehlo; (2) The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz; 3) Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyasaki; 4) The Farming of Bones by Edwidge Danticat; 5) Become a Better You: 7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day by Joel Osteen. As for “In The Heights”, I plan to see it this summer as soon as I have the chance either before NYILFF or after the festival is over.

Nothing will ever compare to him in Ferris Beuller’s Day Off. Now Matthew seems older and colder. Doesn’t have that same magic with the camera that he once did. Your review is the second bad one I’ve seen about this movie. The first stressed to no one how hard it was to tie the whole movie together and view it as one film. And now yours points out that aside from his C+ performance, the rest of the cast made the film weaker. I don’t think I’ll be donating my $10 to this movie. Instead I can not wait and I mean CAN NOT wait until July 18th when the new Batman comes out. There is something eerie about knowing that getting so lost in that role as the Joker, is one of the catalysts that led to Heath Ledger’s death.

later Cedes.

Mercedes nice blog… but now a days guys are afraid about splitting things after getting divorce. Unfortunately some females look for money and not for love and no one is willing to sign a pre-nup. Comerse la torta es una cosa, y quedarse pelao es otra. I hope you understand my point and keep the updates about this matter.

My first impression was, I like the music intro but then it cut-off instead of faded out into your segment. I think you need to put this on youtube. I would imagine someone looking up some of the topics that you present.

I like when you have the background of the orange curtain with the picture on the left-hand side, but i’m not sure why you alternate back to the plain background. It’s nice when you have something interesting as a backdrop.

Xio Salazar (09:01:31) :

I love these last couple webpisodes!!

On your last one- “Honeymoon before the wedding”… I think these days men [and some women] avoid marriage because of the following theory: “Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?”

That being said let’s consider the marital issues… your bills add up, your problems multiply, the “hot” sex decreases, and that’s why some decide to divide. DIVORCE rates have multiplied in the last couple years because people go into a marriage thinking “If doesn’t work we’re getting a divorce.” They forgett that the sole purpose of marriage is for the couple to be together forever… dique.

There’s no good way nowadays to get a man that would want to get married. You just have to play your luck, and don’t forget if you stop giving him the free milk- there’s other cows around.

11 07 2008
M. (10:44:05) :

Your mom is right in a way; there is no hurry for the guy to get married when he probably feels he is married already, living with his girlfriend and acting like a married couple. However, her argument is inferring that men only get married to have sex. Although this could be true for some men and women who do get married so that they can feel more independent from their parents and actually engage in sex freely, this should not be the reason for marriage in the first place. Because when all is said and done, divorce slowly becomes an option; the honeymoon is over. Therefore, I can see the benefits behind living together — at least you know what you are getting yourself into or what to expect. But at the same time, living together shouldn’t be some sport that you engage in with multiple partners. It needs to be with someone that you are pretty much sure the next step will transpire or least substantially certain if not the reasoning behind living together now becomes irresponsible in a way. Now, I am not against people who do want to get married before pre-marital sex. However, the proposal should not transpire only to “look right” in front of others or to God or to engage in marital sex because that’s when divorce comes knocking at the door 3 years later. People should marry to truly embody the sanctity of marriage, and taking their relationship to that level. But an area of marriage that many do not talk about is common law marriage, which is legal in this country like civil ceremonies. Goldie Hawn once said that the reason why she chooses common law marriage instead of marrying through the church is because at the end, the partner WANTS and CHOOSES to be with you. But sometimes in marriage the reason for sticking it out are not for the right reasons, instead the reasons become kids, church or society; perceptions. Now, is there any truth to that? That’s another story. But it is interesting when religion and marriage or at least the “meaning” behind marriage come up. I always did wonder whether couples that have been together and live their lives as husband a wife for 6+ years aka common law marriage, are ‘ok’ in the eyes of God since they are legally married. And if that’s the case, is the definition of marriage depends many times as to the laws of this country? Or let’s say common law marriage was not an option, yet a couple did decide to live together as husband and wife for 20+ years, but never legally got married civilly or through the church, is their relationship a “sin” compared to those that get married and get divorce? And get married again? And get divorce? Or ARE married and have affairs? Because if what is being taught is that marriage = post marital sex, and as long as that is abided by, you’re good then marriage becomes some big excuse to have sex. And THAT should NOT be the reason behind marriage. People spend so much time attaching the words pre-marital sex and marriage that they forget to teach what the sanctity of marriage is or should be about, and sex is only a miniscule of that…

Jessica Bianculli (13:52:22) :

Hey Mercedes!
These are such great topics for webisodes! The one you posted about the honeymoon before marriage… honestly these days I feel that the only reason why marriage exisits is to develop a family. If you’re with some one who is serious about having children with you some day then I think as a couple you should do as much and have as much fun together until that day hopefully comes when you get married and decide to have children.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t think you should act like a married couple or move in together with every person who tells you they want to have kids with you some day, but now a days like you said there is a lot more independence on the woman’s part and we want to go to more places do more activities and if you have someone in your life who can go along for the ride with you, YOU SHOULD! Life is too short to worry so much about what’s going to happen 3 or 5 years if you do something today that makes you happy.

Marriage is for the kids and for the support of a family. And I think that support develops from loving eachother, so it’s not just about sex at that point it’s a lot more than that.

11 07 2008
Johnny P. Cervini (16:22:55) :

I honestly think that the phenomenon of “honeymoom before the marriage” is inevitable. The moment you lock eyes with someone on the train, the bus, at work, or anywhere else of a social nature and you realize that physical chemistry is present, the honeymoon phase begins without cause or warning.

Likewise, one would never purchase a million dollar dress or a million dollar tuxedo unless they try it on to see if it fits right first so why would one venture to act blindly when it comes to something so much more concrete as another human being?

just my two cents.

I AM 100% TO LIVING TOGETHER BEFORE GETTING MARRIED….I DID IT AND I AM STILL GOING ON STRONG WITH MY HUSBAND GOING ON 5 YEARS!! OH YEAH!! MY HUSBAND WANTED TO JUST GET MARRIED BUT I SUGGESTED MOVING IN FOR 1 YEAR TO SEE HOW IT WENT AND I THINK IT WAS A GREAT IDEA BC IT GAVE US TIME TO ADJUST TO EACH OTHER’S LIKES AND DISLIKES WITHOUT FEELING TRAPPED. WE BOTH KNEW WE COULD MOVE OUT AND I THINK THAT IS A GOOD OPTION TO HAVE BECAUSE IF IT TRULLY DOESNT WORK OUT, THEN YOU CAN START WITHOUT DEALING WITH ANY LEGAL MATTERS!!! I KNOW WHERE YOUR MOM IS COMING FROM ABOUT “EATING THE CAKE BEFORE THE WEDDING” BUT I THINK ONE CAN MAINTAIN THE FIRE GOING BY BEING SPOINTANEOUS AND NOT BECOMING BORING. I THINK EVERY YEAR SHOULD HAVE GOALS: IN REGARDS TO WORK, YOUR HOUSE, SEX, FAMILY, VACATIONS, ETC AND BOTH SHOULD WORK TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE AND ENJOY THOSE GOALS….OTHER THAN THAT, GET MARRIED THROUGH THE CIVIL BC A CHURCH WEDDING IS EXPENSIVE AND IS VERY HARD TO GET OUT OF!!! THIS IS MY TWO SENSES ON THE TOPIC!!!! HOPE YOU ALL ENJOY!!!!

Cool views regarding relationships. I think more time should be spent on the subject of dating, since successful dates can help screen out some of the surprises that can come up during a relationship. And yes, that would include traveling together on an extended trip and chatting about future goals.

No secret formulas here. Just Flip( attraction)…Flow(stay focused)…and Feel(consistent connection) regarding that special someone. Have fun!

Well, I must say, I am very disappointed in Latina magazine. Out of all people, how could they let this slide?! I’m sure other readers will notice and write in letting them know that there is a difference between the Cuban and Puerto Rican flag.

What do you think of Kanye West getting more record sales than 50 cent?

Do you think that record sales, given illegal downloading, are still accurate measurements of a music artsist’s popularity among fans? Are hip-hop fans more interested in censorship now-a-days given Nas’s recent change in Album title.

18 07 2008
DANNY HERRERA (15:49:45) :

I HAVE ONE QUESTION REGARDING THE “LATINA” MISTAKE ON THE CUBAN-P.R. FLAG….WHERE DID THE EDITOR ATTEND SCHOOL? I AM ONLY ASKING THIS BECAUSE I AM A SPANISH TEACHER AND I KNOW MOST STUDENTS, SPECIALLY THOSE THAT ARE SPANISH DO NOT WANT TO LEARN ABOUT THEIR ROOTS. WHEN I HAVE TAUGHT ALL THE SPANISH SPEAKING COUNTRIES AND QUIZ STUDENTS ON EACH FLAG, NATIONALITY AND CAPITAL, THE STUDENTS THINK THE LESSON IS A WASTE OF TIME BUT ALWAYS, MAYBE 5 KNOW ALL THE SPANISH SPEAKING COUNTRIES OUT OF 30-SOMETHING KIDS. SECONDLY, IF THIS EDITOR WENT TO A SCHOOL THAT IS PREDOMINANTLY WHITE, LIKE THE ONE THAT I AM CURRENTLY TEACHING AT, MOST STUDENTS THINK THAT SPANISH PEOPLE ONLY COME FROM SPAIN AND MEXICO AND THE REST OF THE COUNTRIES ARE PART AFRICAN OR NEW LANDS FOUND…(I SWEAR, I HEARD THIS AND I ALMOST HIT THE ROOF)! AS MAD AS THESE STATEMENTS MAKE ME, I CAN ONLY BLAME THOSE SPANISH TEACHERS WHO ARE SO FOCUSED ON TEACHING FOR A TEST (REGENTS) INSTEAD OF TAKING THE TIME TO MIX GRAMMAR, VOCAB AND CULTURAL ASPECTS! WE MUST KEEP RAISING AWARENESS, SPECIALLY AT THIS TIME WHERE WE ARE GETTING MORE OPPORTUNITIES AND ARE MORE VALUED MEMBERS OF SOCIETY….THANKS TO HEIDI AND TO YOU MERCEDES FOR RAISING AWARENESS WITH THIS TOPIC!!!
