Who wore it best?

Kate Winslet, Lili Estefan or me?!

By Mercedes Sanchez

While reading People en Español, I came across a photo of Lili Estefan and Kate Winslet in a Stella McCartney dress that looks very much like a short frock I own from Mango! Stella McCartney’s dress from Fall 2011 went for $1600 while I only paid $80 a few weeks for the Mango version. Look at the photo below and tell me who you think wore it best.

What did you wear to Hispanicize?

30 04 2012

Who wore what to Hispanicize

For this week’s #BeChicTuesday, we’re celebrating our social media friends and sharing their outfit photos from the Hispanicize Conference. Take a look…

Amanda (top left) is wearing a black dress with lace details on the shoulder and floral shoes. “This outfit worked well for me because I couldn’t change outfits from day to night,” said Amanda. “So I paired it with a blazer during the day.”

Alba (left) wears a fedora on the third day of the conference.

Alex Z. shared a photo of himself and Lance with the following caption: “What los jefes wore to the Hispanicize Scarface party! All meeyameed out!”

Mixing high and low fashion on the red carpet

30 04 2012

What I wore to the 2012 Latin Billboards

By Mercedes Sanchez

I’m a fan of minimalist fashion and feel comfortable with or without earrings, sporting a day dress with Converse sneakers, rocking a sleek ponytail and going a day without lipstick. And I’m not shy about taking some of that minimal style to the red carpet. See pictures towards end of the post.

How I mixed high and low fashion on the red carpet

The Dress

Because I didn’t have enough time to contact designers and borrow a dress and jewelry like I did for the Alma Awards, I gave myself a budget of $300 for the dress. The BF and I first went to Bloomingdale’s in SoHo where I thought I decided on a one-shoulder hi-low hem royal blue  gown. Then we took the 6 train to the 59th Street department store and decided on this BCBGMAXAZRIA Sophia Halter gown. I loved the coral color, the fabric, the slit and most of all, the fit!

It’s no secret that I have a small bust which sometimes makes shopping difficult. Not like I actually need a bra, but I’d normally go for a padded strapless bra. However, since the gown is semi-backless, I went with no bra and bought a pack of Reusable Petal Tops to be safe.

Accessories

I often encourage my readers to stick to their personal style– and budget– when shopping. So after spending $325.00 (went $25 over budget), I decided to stay frugal with my accessories and went to a local Forever 21 store where I purchased a pair of Threaded Rhinestone Earrings for $6.80, Stretchy Teardrop Ring, $5.80 and a Beaded Pattern Cuff in Mint/Gold for $7.80!

Clutch
I wore a metallic leather clutch c/o designer Mariela Zapata. Her Egyptian Gold Clutch is hand stitched and is covered in shimmer and medieval ornaments. Retails at $445.00

Shoes

Gold or bronze shoes would have been a great match with my clutch, but I wanted to add a contrasting color to my coral dress. I quickly stopped by DSW hoping to find inexpensive teal heels, and I did! In less than a minute, I spotted these Audrey Brooke Bracelet Pantent Pumps and bought them at $59.95.

“Over the shoulder!”

Just for fun, here’s the dress I almost purchased (shot with my Blackberry):
