brazil summer shop True Story:  ”We can immediately tell who’s Brazilian and who isn’t,” said one of the designers at the Summer Shop store in Brasilia. “While other women prefer to cover up a little more, Brazilian women wear these.”

And that’s when she showed me a yellow itty bitty bikini thong.

Our summer must-haves

On the runway we saw their full collection of gorgeous beachwear— from sarongs, see-through tops, thongs and men in speedos in bright, bold colors.

What I Wore to Ambassador’s House in Brazil

6 12 2011

Dinner with Brazilian ambassadors and their kin

By Mercedes Sanchez

One of my favorite evenings in Brazil took place at the house of Jocelyne Saint-Geours, the French ambassador in Brazil. Her home was incredibly beautiful, enormous and perfect for a party.

There we met Dario and Eliana Murargy whose parents are ambassadors of Mozambique — their dad in Brazil and mom in Switzerland. Talk about being international!

For the dinner party honoring French designer Sakina, I wore a black blazer over my one-shoulder white mini dress with an old pair of gold shoes and a chic side ponytail.

Take a look at some of the photos below.

Eliana Murargy: From Africa to Brazilian Runway

6 12 2011

Bold colors hit Brasilia

By Mercedes Sanchez

eliana murargy designerWe had the pleasure of meeting Eliana Murargy, of Murade, the night before her fashion show in Brazil.

“This is the first time I used so many different colors,” says Eliana. “It almost makes me nervous because I usually stick to black.”

Eliana– who we can say is literally international– went to school in South Africa and has been living in Brasilia for the past four years. Her father is the ambassador of Mozambique in Brazil while her mother is the ambassador in Switzerland!

Murargy used silk and satin for her bold frocks and told us that the collection represents the African Maasai group integrated with a modern, urban woman.

“My collection is practically my DNA,” says Brazilian Designer Romildo Nascimiento. “So that’s what I called it: DNA. The collection also demonstrates a little of the history of Brasilia.”

In his tasteful work, Nascimiento used cotton and natural fabrics for his menswear. For the women, he created some pieces by hand.

“I’m hoping to reach a variety of people with my collection,” says Nascimiento. “I designed for men who are much more laid back, are open minded and daring. And the woman I designed for is more of the glamorous type.”

Camila Prado: 70s with a Tropical Twist

4 12 2011

Q&A with Brazilian Designer Camila Prado

By Mercedes Sanchez

camila prado

In Brazil, Camila Prado introduced us to a 70s inspired collection with a mix of tropical glam. Take a look at the photos and video below, but first here’s a brief Q&A.

Mercedes: What woman did you have in mind when you were putting your collection together?

Camila: She’s a modern woman from a big city that likes to work. She goes out in the evening wearing the same clothes from work but she glams it up by adding one key item over her outfit. I used lots of shiny fabric and cotton.

M: What three items should every woman have in her closet?

C: Good pair of pants (including jeans), a black dress and a leather jacket.

M: What does being chic mean to you?

C: Being chic is to construct your own style. Don’t just copy what’s in the magazines — make it your own.

M: Describe Brazilian Fashion.

C: Colorful, fun and over the top.
