BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

2 10 2009

Mercedes Sanchez October is breast cancer awareness month. Rebecca Taylor, one of our favorite designers, made a special silk ruffle blouse to raise funds for the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation – an organization dedicated to raising awareness and funding research aimed at this aggressive subtype of breast cancer. Approximately 15% of breast cancer cases are classified as triple negative, most often occurring in younger women and African-Americans.

When a woman is diagnosed with triple negative, it means the cancer is negative for estrogen, progesterone, and HER-2 hormone receptors, making most common breast cancer treatments ineffective. The Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation was established in honor of Nancy Block-Zenna, a woman who was diagnosed at age 35 with triple negative breast cancer and died 2 1/2 years later. TNBCF’s mission is to raise awareness of triple negative breast cancer and to support scientists and researchers in their effort to determine the causes of triple negative breast cancer, so that effective prevention and treatment can be pursued and achieved.

The best part about this fashionable pink silk blouse? Rebecca Taylor feels strongly about finding a cure for this unique subtype of breast cancer so 100% of the proceeds go directly to TNBC. The blouse retails for $225 and is available exclusively at Shopbop. - Carolina Baker

RACIST COOKIES IN THE VILLAGE

23 01 2009

BAKERY MAKES RACIST “DRUNKEN NEGRO FACE” COOKIE

Just when it seemed that as a country we were going on a better direction, a bakery owner in Greenwich Village proves that racism is still alive, even in the Village. Ted Kefalinos of the popular Lafayette French Pastry is offering his customers what he calls “drunken negro face” cookies. According to a customer Fox5 spoke with, Kefalinos actually said the N-word instead of “negro”. The disturbed baker said he made the cookies in honor of our new president, and that “he’s following in the same path of Abraham Lincoln; he will get his”.

When a co-worker sent me this clip earlier today, I was disgusted and ashamed that this bakery is located in one of my favorite neighborhoods. See the whole story here:

A FASHIONISTA’S HIATUS

8 09 2008

A Personal Reflection

Freedom

Have you ever just stopped and examined your life? I did, and I came to the conclusion that nothing really matters. Three years ago when I worked at the New York Post I had what I thought were the best years of my life. From going to high profile events, skipping to the front of lines because I was “too good” to ever be on one, to attending endless networking functions where everyone was full of shit but couldn’t stand the chance of not being seen or meeting that one person who will change their lives. I was one of those people, and admit that I occasionally turn on the switch whenever it’s convenient. But I realized, having phony conversations and going to event after event just gets tiring. I’m on a no-bullshit tolerance thus causing my fashion/social hiatus.

I gave up my stilettos and BCBG flats for my worn out, brown Tommy Hill flip flops and my skinny jeans for my red, hippie, printed ankle-length skirt. I exchanged my debit card (which I used more often on cosmo’s and monthly bills) for a brand new library card. And out of the 500 songs on my iPod nano, I only seem to listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers over and over.

Even Fashion Week Spring 2009 wasn’t the same this year for me. My desk is full of invites of which I only RSVP’d to two including Elle.com and Nigel Barker’s cocktail party that took place in Bloomingale’s this evening. However, I missed yet another event. This is a different lifestyle which makes it somewhat frightening, but the truth is I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything at all.

Have you ever left everything you thought made you you?
