FERN MALLIS: WOMAN ON TOP
By MERCEDES SANCHEZ Sure you like fashion, but do you know the facts behind Fashion Week? I had the pleasure of meeting with Fern Mallis, the creator of what we know today as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at her office days before the doors open at Bryant Park. Mallis is the senior vice president to IMG Fashion where she began the concept of showcasing various shows under one "roof" 17 years ago. You can say it was literally by accident.
Plaster fell from the ceiling at a Michael Kors show in 1991 hitting models like Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and even notable editors who on the following day wrote they "lived for fashion but didn't want to die for it." Shortly after, Mallis and her team centralized the shows under one location at Bryant Park. But starting this fall, the tents are moving to Lincoln Center!
We also asked the woman on top to share some inside tips on how YOU can try to get a seat at an upcoming show. Take a look at the video below to see what Fern Mallis has to say exclusively on BeChicMag.com.
