How to Pick the Best Swimsuit for Your Body Type
By Mercedes Sanchez Now is the perfect time to start shopping for bathing suits— even if you don’t plan on hitting the beach until the start of the summer.
Most department stores get loads of new packages during this time of year with all sizes and styles that will quickly get sold out.
We come in all shapes and sizes: curvy, round, and sometimes straight. But when talking swimwear, you have to ask yourself if you fit in any of these categories:
- Apple or V shape (triangle downward)
- Pear or A shape (triangle upward)
- Boyish or straight (rectangular)
- Hourglass (triangles opposing, facing in)
Let us explain:
APPLE OR V-SHAPE
Women with an ‘apple shape’ are more busty and tend to carry weight on the stomach, and overall, have a more round shape.
I recommend wearing a one-piece with a V-neckline as it adds a sexy touch. Look for fabrics with spandex and lyrca that will tuck your tummy in but also make it easy to move around.
If you prefer a two-piece, a tankini is a great choice as the extra draping will cover part of the waist and hips—almost like a sarong does.
Consider solid darker colors like blue or red.
Chicas with a pear shape are smaller on top with narrow shoulders, and bigger on the bottom with wide hips.
When it comes to swimwear, consider trying on a swimsuit that will bring more attention to your bust area to balance out your pear shape. For example, look for an empire-line swimsuit – this gives a more high-waisted appearance.
To add some volume to your smaller breasts, there’s nothing wrong with adding some padding. Just make sure they’re waterproof.
For a two-piece, try a top with ruffles or bright colors, or a longer bottom to make your legs look leaner.
The hourglass is a shape many of us would like as it makes shopping for a swimsuit just a little bit easier.
A woman with an hourglass shape has a bigger bust, a smaller waist and wide hips.
When it comes to shopping for either a one-piece or two-piece swimsuit, focus on one that has enough support on top. Halter pieces are great for lifting and supporting your bust. Also consider wide straps for extra comfort.
Pretty much any color, prints or vertical stripes will work well with an hourglass shape.
Ladies with a boyish figure have a straighter silhouette. They’re small on top and on the bottom. Although it may seem more challenging to shop for, it doesn’t have to be.
The trick is to accentuate what you do have. For instance, look for a swimsuit that has ruched detailing across the top to make your bust look bigger. Or try a halter with prints, or bathing suit with a low neckline.
Women with a boyish figure should look for the following: any color that pops, fun prints, details like a one-shoulder, or frills that enhance the appearance of the bottom area.
