Adding Color to Your Summer Style

By Contributing Writer Camlyn Valdez Bright pinks, oranges, purples, greens, and blues - the summer is the season for poppin' colors.

I'm always experimenting with my hair. After letting my mohawk grow out, I've been feeling a little bored. Inspired by celebs like Demi Lovato, Kelly Osbourne, and Nicole Richie, I decided to go with a magenta ombre. This was fun and an easy way to spice up my look and it washed out from a 2 week to a month period.

Here's a hair selfie:

If you’re going to do this yourself, the best brands would be Manic Panic or Ion – both have a large variety of bright colors. Manic Panic can be found at some beauty supply stores however; your best bet would be going to Ricky’s NYC – $13.99. Ion, which is the brand I used, will be more common at beauty supply stores ranging from $9.99-$12.99.

For long lasting color and less damage (because you will have to bleach your hair) it will require more attention.

Make sure to buy shampoo and conditioner especially made for color treated hair. My favorite is TRESemmé Color Revitalize – you can get this at drugstores for around $3 to $4. The shampoo and conditioner, unlike others I’ve tried, did not allow my hair to get brittle and did not strip the color out as quickly.

Also, for long lasting color, try shampooing less depending on your hair type and deep condition to keep your hair healthy. Because I have thick, curly hair a mix up my deep conditioners but I always make sure to have an olive oil or coconut oil to keep my hair hydrated and the color bright.

If the bright locks are too permanent or just a bit too far out, play around with your make up look. When it comes to make up, eyeliner and lipstick is the way to go.

For eyeliner, you can easily find a variety of selections at Sephora.

Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner has 28 colors to choose from for $20.00. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil carries a selection of 40 different colors, $20.00. These two glide on easily as well as lasting all day through the summer heat.

For lipstick, I like to stick with something moisturizing, long lasting, with the perfect pop. Revlon's ColorBurst Matte Balms are my new favorite. In fun colors like orange and bright purples, it may just be what you need to brighten up any outfit. This can be found at any drugstore for less than $10.
